Catalytic Converters

Since 1986 all petrol engined cars sold in Australia have had catalytic converters fitted. These devices, commonly known as a “cats”, change the harmful gases emitted from a car’s engine into less harmful gases via a catalytic reaction. The three functions of a cat are :

1. Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen
2. Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide
3. Oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water

It is important to have your catalytic converter checked regularly. All A1 Exhausts stores offer this service free of charge. Common problems of older cats are that their effectiveness reduces over a period of time, they can get blocked or contaminated and their internal substrate can melt down or break up.

Diesel Purifiers 

It’s not only petrol engines that emit harmful gases, diesel engines are just as bad. We are able to reduce emissions from almost any diesel powered vehicle or machine – trucks, busses, construction equipment, forklifts, generators, etc.

Diesel purifiers can reduce carbon monoxide by over 90%, hydrocarbons by 60-90% depending on engine type, diesel particulate matter reduced from 20-50%. nitrogen oxide from LPG engines can be reduced by more than 95%.
